From Floating on Air to Crashing Down: My Fertility Wake-Up Call

When I was 35 years old, my life started to approach pure perfection. I was not walking – I was floating over the streets of Barcelona. I met my husband (the love of my life) at the age of 34, and I came to live with him in Barcelona, the best city of the world. I had everything – my career, him, us, Barcelona, I was unstoppable… until one routine check with my doctor just to see “how much time I have”.

Well, that was one of the worst days of my life. My FSH was over 20, he did not see any antral follicles, my oestradiol was so low, in his words “your time is up with 36, your ovarian reserve is like you are 46 and this is bad”. Not sure how I managed to get out of that clinic, thinking that this cannot be me – I got my period every 28 days, I was feeling my ovulation every 14th day. This cannot be.

I will never forget that day I was going home over Via Laietana, looking at all those people having fun and smiling, and I was thinking I hate this city, I hate all these people around me, I will never laugh again. What I did not know at that time was that things can get worse; much worse in fact. How stupid and naive I was.

Confronting the Harsh Reality of Infertility

From that point on our life was just around follicles, FSH, AMH, oestradiol, progesterone, IVFs, and everything spiced with such a strong anxiety because sometimes you do not see the way out from all those negative happenings. My AMH was 0.183 (I will never forget that number)! After hearing that number, I was in depression for four weeks, because I knew very well what it means, that I am biologically almost 50 years old. I knew that by myself, nobody needed to tell me. I was broken.

From Despair to Determination: Taking Control of My Fertility

Luckily 0.183 in my case was just a number. But that number changed my life, from that moment on I decided to fight and to take my destiny in my own hands. I read everything about IVFs, I heard every podcast about it, I watched every video about how to increase egg quality, I bought every fertility diet book on the market, I read such an enormous amount of research about supplements, I entered deeply in the science of embryology. I was writing down the most important points and finally I created my own action plan, changed my lifestyle, concentrated on my mental and physical health. I was so focused to get only one good egg, and I got it.

After seven years of going through the hell, we got our “golden embryo”. We got our son. And that was not all, we have five embryos more waiting for us. We were lucky to find the best doctor and the best clinic that fought with us until the end and never let us down.
